Since 1890 when drywall was invented, interior construction has been guided by a largely unspoken assumption: build for permanence. A space is planned, walls are erected, systems are installed, and the environment is expected to remain largely unchanged for years, if not decades. If needs evolve, the solution is straightforward. Renovate. Demolish. Rebuild. 

This model made sense when organizations moved more slowly than the buildings that housed them. But today, businesses operate in an environment defined by continuous change. Teams expand and contract. Departments reorganize. New technologies alter workflows. Privacy requirements evolve. Entire business models can shift before a lease term expires. In many cases, the pace of organizational change has begun to outstrip the pace of construction itself. 

Yet much of interior architecture is still designed as though stability were the norm, creating a growing mismatch between the way organizations operate and the environments designed to support them. 

Not Every Wall Should Move

One of the biggest misconceptions about adaptable architecture is the belief that flexibility should exist everywhere. That’s simply not the case. Some parts of a building are unlikely to change for decades. Core infrastructure, service areas, building systems, and long-term architectural elements often benefit from the efficiency and economy of conventional construction. In these situations, permanence is an asset, not a limitation. 

This helps set conditions to make intentional flexibility the goal, no flexibility everywhere. In case after case, we see the most effective
environments recognize that different parts of a workplace operate on different timelines. Some elements move at the pace of the building. Others move at the pace of the business. Understanding the difference is where the real opportunity begins. 

Beyond the Front Wall

Since modular architecture has taken hold, it is typically experienced as glass fronts, the visible expression of flexibility. They introduce transparency, daylight, and a higher level of architectural refinement. But they rarely change the underlying logic of how most spaces were constructed. Behind the glass, conventional walls often remain fixed. 

The greatest opportunity for adaptability lies deeper in the floorplate—in the walls that define departments, separate teams, create privacy, and establish the boundaries that organizations routinely need to adjust over time.  

Designing for Day 2

Most construction decisions are made with Day 1 in mind, when budgets, schedules, and occupancy dates matter. But what happens when the organization experiences change? A team grows unexpectedly. A department is reorganized. Confidential work requires greater separation. New opportunities emerge. A workplace strategy evolves. Leadership asks the environment to do something different than it was originally designed to do. 

Traditional construction often treats these changes as renovation projects. Walls are demolished. Materials are discarded. Trades are mobilized. Employees are displaced. Work is interrupted. Adaptive architecture approaches the same situations differently because it assumes change will happen and transforms that sensibility into an operational capability. 

Adaptability Must Work for Everyone

One reason adaptable systems have not always been widely adopted is that many of them solve for the future while creating complexity in the present. A system may promise reconfiguration later, but if it disrupts construction schedules, complicates sequencing, or creates friction during installation, the benefits become difficult to realize. 

For adaptability to scale, it must work for all stakeholders— owners and occupants, architects and designers, contractors, electricians, facilities teams, and the people responsible for bringing projects to life. And the most successful systems fit naturally into the realities of how projects are delivered while preserving the ability to evolve
long after occupancy. 

Performance must move with the space, as well. As organizations become more dynamic, the need for acoustic privacy, concentration, confidentiality, and focused work frequently increases rather than decreases. And a workplace that can change quickly but cannot preserve performance creates a different problem. The most effective adaptive environments allow walls, rooms, and boundaries
to evolve while maintaining the conditions people depend on.  

Fixed Where They Should Be. Flexible Where They Must Be.

The future of interior architecture doesn’t pose a standoff between drywall and modular construction. It offers the choice between designing for certainty and designing for change. Organizations will continue to need permanence. They will continue to need structure, stability, and long-term investment. But they will also need environments capable of evolving alongside shifting business needs. 

The most successful spaces will be those that balance both.
